Meta Ads Editor
Different media for feed and stories
Use a square piece in the feed and the vertical version in stories and reels, in the same ad, with Customize by placement.
Quick answer
In the Meta Ads Editor, pick the feed media under Creatives, turn on Customize by placement and pick the vertical versions under Media for stories and reels, in the same number and order. Click Create Ads: each ad takes both media files.

Before you start
- Have both versions of each piece: square or 4:5 for the feed, 9:16 for stories and reels.
- Media pair up by order: feed 1 with stories 1, 2 with 2. Pick the same number in both fields.
- It does not work with Carousel or with text variations: the ad goes out with a single text.
Step by step
In this example, we upload two pieces with a feed and a stories version.
- 1
Pick the feed media
Pick the account and campaigns and, under Creatives, select the feed pieces.
- 2
Turn on Customize by placement
Below the file list, turn on Customize by placement. The Media for stories and reels field shows up.
- 3
Pick the vertical versions
Under Media for stories and reels, select the 9:16 versions in the same order as the feed ones.
- 4
Upload the ads
Click Create Ads. Each ad goes out with the feed media in feed placements and the vertical one in stories and reels.
From Drive too
When importing from Google Drive with placement on, choose Stories and reels under Import into to send the files straight to the second field.
How to tell it worked
- In Meta, the ad shows different media per placement.
- In the Meta preview, the feed shows the square piece and stories the vertical one.
If something goes wrong
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The upload asks for the same number | The two fields have different numbers of files | Keep the same number under Creatives and Media for stories and reels |
| The stories piece got paired with the wrong feed one | The file order did not match | Remove and pick again in the same order, or rename the files with numbers |
| I cannot turn on the carousel | Carousel and custom placement do not go together | Turn one of them off |
Frequently asked questions
Which file formats does the editor accept, and are there size or quantity limits?
Images in JPG, JPEG, PNG, GIF and WEBP formats and videos in MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV and WEBM are supported. You can upload up to 50 files at a time. Large videos are supported too, including files over 100MB: the system automatically uses optimized chunked upload and Meta's advanced upload, with no size-limit error. Very large videos can take Meta a few minutes to process, and the screen shows the progress of the media upload and ad creation in real time.
