Meta Ads Editor
Text and headline variations
Put up to 5 texts and 5 headlines in the same ad: Meta tests the combinations and shows the best performer, without one ad per copy.
Quick answer
In the Meta Ads Editor, write the Primary Text and click Add text variation for each extra version (up to 4). For headlines, use Add headline variation. Create the ads as usual: each ad goes out with all versions.

Before you start
- The primary text and headline in the fields above are the first version; variations add 4 more of each.
- Variations apply to every ad in the upload, including the ones customized in Edit each ad.
- Variations do not work with Instagram Existing post or with Customize by placement: in those cases a single version goes out.
Step by step
In this example, we test two different hooks for the same creative.
- 1
Write the primary text
Pick the account and campaigns and fill in the Primary Text. It is the first version.
- 2
Add the variations
Click Add text variation and write the other version. Repeat up to 4 times. For headlines, click Add headline variation. Remove variation deletes only that line.
- 3
Upload the ads
Pick the creatives and click Create Ads. Each ad goes to Meta with all text and headline versions.
Write them with AI
The Generate copy with AI button creates up to 5 suggestions: the first one you pick becomes the primary text and the others become variations.
How to tell it worked
- In Meta, the ad shows Multiple text options on the primary text and headline.
- In Meta ad reporting, the breakdown by text asset shows which version delivered more.
If something goes wrong
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The headline variation button disappeared | Carousel is on: each card has its own headline | Turn off the carousel or use one headline per card |
| The ad went out with a single text | The upload used Existing post or media by placement | Use Create new ad or turn off Customize by placement |
| I cannot add more variations | The limit is 5 texts and 5 headlines per ad | Remove a variation before writing another one |
Frequently asked questions
Can I test more than one text in the same ad in Meta Ads Editor?
Yes. In the Meta Ads Editor, below the main text field, click Add variation and write another version of the text. You can add up to 4 variations besides the main one (5 texts in total). Meta tests the versions with your audience and keeps running the one that performs best, so you don't need to create a separate ad for each copy.
Details:
- Remove a variation individually with the X on its own row, without deleting the others.
- Variations are saved with the configuration and carry over when you duplicate or upload again.
- They do NOT work with an existing post (such as an Instagram post) or with media set per placement. In those cases, you can use only one copy.
If you use the MCP or AI Copilot, ask for the same thing, with up to 4 variations besides the main text.
