Meta Ads Editor
Ad names in the editor
Understand the automatic AD01, AD02 numbering and use the file name, the suffix and the ad set suffix to find each ad later.
Quick answer
With Ad Name empty, the editor continues the ad set numbering (AD05, AD06). Turn on File Name so the creative name goes into the ad, and use Ad Complement to add text at the end of every name. Check the result in Edit each ad.

Before you start
- Numbering is read from the ads already in each ad set, so each ad set continues its own sequence.
- Keep current suffix (on by default) repeats the text after the number in the ad set, as in AD06 - Delivery.
- With File Name on, the Ad Name field is locked: the name comes from the file, without the extension.
Step by step
In this example, we name the ads of a weekend promo.
- 1
Let numbering work
Pick the account and campaigns and leave Ad Name empty: each ad gets the next number in the ad set.
- 2
Use the file name
Turn on File Name. The name now combines the number and the file, as in AD05 - massa-carbonara.
- 3
Add a suffix
Under Ad Complement, write the text that should go at the end of every name, like the promo or the date.
- 4
Check before uploading
Pick the creatives and open Edit each ad: the Ad name column shows the exact name that will go out in each ad set.
Fixed name
If you prefer a single name, type it in Ad Name with File Name off. In the Instagram tab, File Name uses the post profile @.
How to tell it worked
- In Edit each ad, the Ad name column shows the names in the ad set sequence.
- In Meta Ads Manager, the ads show up with the number, the file and the suffix.
If something goes wrong
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The name only has the number | Keep current suffix was off and there was no suffix | Turn on Keep current suffix or fill in the suffix |
| I cannot type in Ad Name | File Name is on | Turn off File Name to use a fixed name |
| Numbering restarted at AD01 | The ad set had no ads in the AD pattern | That is expected: the first ad in the pattern starts at AD01 |
Frequently asked questions
What does the File Name option do in the editor?
Turn on the File Name toggle on the Create Ad tab, and each ad is named after the file you upload, with the extension removed automatically: creative-black-friday.mp4 becomes an ad called creative-black-friday. If the ad set already uses the ADxx pattern, the system keeps the numbering by combining the two, for example AD20 - creative-black-friday. On the Ad with Instagram Link tab, the same option names the ad after the @username of the post's Instagram profile. While the toggle is on, the Ad Name field is disabled.
What does the Keep current suffix (besides ADXX) option mean?
The suffix is the text that comes after the number in automatic naming. For example, in AD01 - Lip Filler, the suffix is Lip Filler. With Keep current suffix turned on (the default), new ads follow the ad set's pattern: AD06 - Lip Filler. With it turned off, only the number is used: AD06. The suffix is read from the first ad already in the ad set, so each ad set can have a different suffix.
What is the Ad Complement field for?
The Ad Complement is text added to the end of the ad name, which makes ads easier to identify in Meta Ads Manager. For example, if you type Black Friday, the ad is named AD01 - Black Friday. It's useful for telling creative variations apart within the same campaign, such as influencer batches or promotional dates. The complement works with both automatic naming and custom names.
